Canadian Mennonite University is looking for up to 3 Student Research Assistant(s) to shape and contribute to a research project exploring narratives of purpose and belonging among undergraduate student participants.

Position Summary:

This project is conceptualized within a Students-as-Partners framework, meaning that the expectation is that Student Research Assistants will actively collaborate and partner with faculty to develop and shape all aspects of the project. You will work under the direction of CMU faculty member Christine Kampen Robinson and will contribute to the development and implementation of the Research Manitoba-funded research project Narrating Future Selves: Student Narratives of Identity and Purpose in Experiential Learning.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

• Collaborating with faculty researcher and other research team members to shape project and areas of focus.
• Conducting literature reviews, environmental scans, and annotated bibliographies.
• Conducting qualitative research fieldwork including focus groups and interviews.
• Contributing to reports, briefs, presentations, and other written media.
• Transcribing interviews using particular conventions.
• Analyzing and coding qualitative research data.
• Contributing ideas and feedback in team meetings to shape project direction.
• Participating in mandatory training(s), (e.g. TCPS2: CORE-2022 Ethics in Research).
• Planning and prioritizing independent work schedule within defined parameters.

Qualifications:

• Legally authorized to work in Canada.
• Undergraduate (completed at least 60 credit hours) or graduate student at a postsecondary institution, or recent graduate with a background in social sciences.
• Experience implementing range of research methodologies (particularly qualitative) through coursework and independent projects; social sciences research background is an asset; however, comprehensive training will be provided.
• Interest in collaborative partnership role with a faculty member in researching student learning and experience, including interest in co-publication projects.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to proactively ask questions and provide feedback on working relationship with supervisor and research teammates.
• Strong written and oral communication skills to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, including academic and non-academic.
• Strong analytical skills, with an eye for detail and ability to learn new methodologies quickly.
• Ability to work independently and in a self-paced way to manage tasks and time effectively.
• Understanding of anti-oppressive and community-based research paradigms or a willingness to learn about and apply them.
• Previous experience with interactional analysis, (critical) discourse analysis, narrative analysis, and/or conversation analysis an asset.

While their main sphere of focus is their region, they will team up with the Regional Directors across Canada with the purpose of working together to develop and implement relevant resources and strategies across the country. They oversee and are responsible for the following areas: hiring and supervising the staff and volunteer team in their region; the operation of camps, clubs and sports initiatives in their region; managing the region's budget; developing relationships with local churches and community sports groups.

Position Type: Full Time or Part-Time (20 – 40 hours/week)

Required Skills and Abilities:

• You have a deep and growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ
• You would be committed to Athletes in Actions' leadership, methods and ministry models
• You have the ability to communicate effectively in a variety of ways (written, spoken, virtually)
• You have a working knowledge of Google's G Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Sheets, Docs, Sites)
• You have an understanding of and passion for the athletic world and the integration of faith and sports
• You have good time management, an ability to be flexible and willingness to take initiative
• You have the ability to relate well to churches, para-church organizations, athletic organizations and administrators
• You have the ability to lead others in areas of personal and spiritual development

*This position requires Ministry Partner Development where the successful candidate will be required to build a team which provides financial and prayer support for salary and ministry expenses including benefits coverage.
