Josh Werbiski, a final-year Métis student from Brandon, Manitoba, is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Drawn to CMU by its strong community and the opportunity to pursue both his academic and athletic passions, Josh found a perfect fit for his goals. Through his volleyball career with the Blazers Men's Volleyball Team (MVB), Josh built lasting friendships and gained invaluable support, both academically and athletically.
As a first-year student, Josh was welcomed into a close-knit circle that remained strong throughout his time at CMU. With the help of scholarships through Indspire and academic advisors like Gina Loewen, who "was really helpful with organizing classes and planning out a schedule that worked," he successfully balanced his coursework with his sport. Traveling with the MVB team, particularly to the CCAA Championship in Quebec, was a highlight, giving Josh the opportunity to explore more of Canada while deepening his passion for volleyball.
Josh's dedication was recognized through accolades such as the 2023/24 Blazers Leadership Award. However, he finds the greatest fulfillment in giving back to the team. "The best part about my time at CMU has been giving back to the team and leaving everything out on the court." Now an assistant coach for the Blazers, Josh is committed to fostering the same sense of community and trust for the next generation of student-athletes.
Indigenous supports, resources, and activities
CMU offers a variety of staff- and student-led activities designed with intentionality to foster community and engagement. The Indigenous Students Group, part of our Student Council, organizes a range of fun and meaningful events throughout the year.
The Indigenous Students Lounge, a collaborative project between Indigenous students and CMU, provides a culturally-safe space for Indigenous students. The lounge is smudge-friendly and serves as a welcoming space for meals, ceremonies, and events hosted by our Elder in Residence, Vince Solomon. Students are encouraged to study, eat, and relax in the lounge as they feel comfortable.
