Lead Maintenance Technician

Full-Time, Permanent, 1.0 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE)

As the Lead Maintenance Technician, you assist the Physical Plant Manager in managing the maintenance of the university’s buildings and grounds. In this position, you have a keen understanding of maintenance requirements and systems and can recognize maintenance issues, prioritize, and determine optimal solutions.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Supervise, train, and support the maintenance staff, including setting priorities, assigning work tasks, and reallocating work based on fluctuating priorities as required to the situation.
  • Support the Physical Plant Manager in defining work assignments for vendors and contract trades people.
  • Support the Physical Plant Manager to assess, develop, and implement maintenance requirements and processes and procedures to address short term and long-term building needs.
  • Conduct general maintenance and repairs using standard trade skills and/or operating related equipment.
  • Supervise and execute renovation projects, including planning, determining required materials and trades, and supervising staff and external contractors.
  • Troubleshoot, plan, and perform minor repairs including carpentry, drywall, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and problems with maintenance equipment and appliances.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, and supervising summer maintenance staff.
  • Champion health, safety, and security issues and develop appropriate procedures as appropriate.
  • Oversee the maintenance and functionality of the building’s HVAC systems including hot water, glycol, steam, and geo-thermal.
    • Oversee preventative maintenance and planning, including testing, recordkeeping, directing staff and external contractors, and prioritizing solutions.
  • Participate in on-call rotation with other Maintenance staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position works in a fast-paced dynamic environment that encompasses indoor and outdoor physical activity, working in hot and cold environments, The Lead Maintenance Technician is required to perform tasks that involve moving, bending, walking, standing, and lifting heavy objects of up to 100lbs. This position works with various equipment and chemicals and must follow health and safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment. This position will experience frequent interruptions requiring flexibility, shifting priorities, and the occasional need to respond to issues outside of normal office hours.

WHAT YOU OFFER

  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience working in a Maintenance environment; a combination of relevant experience and education may be considered.
  • 5th Class Power Engineer Certificate or ability to qualify.
  • Significant skill in one or more of the following: carpentry (rough and finish), operation/maintenance of commercial heating/cooling systems, plumbing, electrical.
  • Experience supervising others with the ability to lead a diverse team.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Ability to recognize maintenance issues, prioritize, and determine optimal solutions.
  • Aptitude for engaging and supervising external contractors.
  • Knowledge of life safety systems.
  • Self-motivated with strong interpersonal skills, organizational abilities, and the willingness to work independently and with others in a team-oriented environment.
  • Creative and inventive problem-solver.
