Theology of the Book of Genesis

As a book about beginnings, Genesis is foundational for both the biblical story and Christian faith. This course will explore themes such as creation, blessing, the problem of sin, God’s call, promise and fulfilment, and the formation of God’s people. The course will also examine how these themes contribute to the larger biblical story and Christian faith. The breath of God enlivens the first human, and the wrath of God destroys the resultant population. The word of God calls progeny “good,” and the command of God calls for the sacrifice of a first-born child. From beauty to devastation, and hope to horror, the book of Genesis has captured the imagination of generations of religious faithful and religious critics alike. How can such a text continue to shape the belief and practice of the church today? Informed by critical methods, ancient parallels, and literary form, this course will lead students through a close reading of the book of Genesis. The course will be grounded by the following questions: What does Genesis say about God and how God interacts with God’s creation? What does Genesis have to say about the earth and the place of humanity therein? And, how can Genesis continue to inform faith and practice for the church? Evaluating programs is a means of systematically assessing interventions designed to promote development and conflict resolution. This course covers formative evaluations required for program decision-making and summation evaluations applicable for analyzing outcomes and impacts to determine relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability, and potential for replication of programs normally implemented by non-governmental organizations. Current debates in approaches to evaluation are also reviewed. Genocide, war, and violent conflict—and their prevention—are among the pressing problems investigated by conflict analysts and peacebuilders. This course introduces students to key conceptual frameworks for interpreting and understanding the occurrence of extreme forms of conflict involving both state and non-state actors. Disruptive Good News: The Church in Acts

The church in the Acts of the Apostles is accused of “turning the world upside down” (Acts 17:6). The Holy Spirit blows through the church, often turning it upside down. Refugees and Forced Migration

Global trends continue to show unprecedented numbers of forcibly displaced people worldwide. Countries have struggled with how to assist refugees and internally displaced people. Less than one percent of refugees under UNHCR mandate are resettled in other countries. This course explores the root causes of forcibly displaced people; the costs associated with such movements, including economic, physical, and mental health; the responses of world governments; and the work of resettlement agencies in assisting refugees. Despite their historic peace church status, Anabaptist-Mennonite peace positions have not incorporated opposition to gender-based violence until recently. Drawing mainly from conversations in Mennonite Church Canada and USA, this course examines contemporary theological, ecclesial, and ethical issues facing these branches of the church as they recognize past failures and begin to integrate gender justice into their peace theologies, with particular focus on intersections with feminist theologies, power analysis, and the roles of forgiveness, restorative justice, and trauma healing within abuse response and prevention. *REGARDING TIME CHANGE*: This course has two options for attendance. Procreation, fertility, and family are key elements in the biblical stories of God’s people. While these themes are central to God’s promises and movement in the lives of God’s people, we struggle with the theological and societal pressures surrounding fertility, including the stigmas of childlessness, singleness, and unwanted pregnancy. This course will examine these themes and the various forms of family in the biblical text.
