Full-time, 6-Week Term (40 hours per week)

As a Cook, you will be responsible for preparing and serving high-quality meals in a cafeteria environment for CMU students, staff, faculty, and guests. You will work as part of a team to support daily dining services while providing friendly and efficient customer service. In addition, you will assist with the preparation and service of catering orders for both internal university events and external clients.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Prepare and serve daily breakfast, lunch, and supper for the CMU Residence Program, ensuring food quality, presentation, and portion sizes meet established standards.
  • Interpret and scale recipes to prepare menu items in appropriate quantities, ensuring production deadlines and quality standards are met.
  • Prepare baked goods daily for desserts, catering functions, and the Folio Café.
  • Assist with the preparation, execution, and service of catering orders for a variety of on-campus groups and events.
  • Support the preparation of food products for other CMU Food Services initiatives and projects as required.
  • Set up, maintain, and replenish service areas, serving meals directly to students, staff, and guests in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Respond to last-minute changes in meal service and catering requirements with flexibility and professionalism.
  • Adhere to all food safety, sanitation, and workplace health and safety standards, maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with dishwashing, cleaning, and kitchen closing duties as required.
  • Contribute to a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment through effective communication and collaboration.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Cook position operates in a fast-paced kitchen environment with high-volume production and time-sensitive deadlines. This role requires standing for extended periods, performing repetitive tasks, and regularly lifting items weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs). Working in a commercial kitchen setting, the Cook will routinely use sharp kitchen tools and equipment, work around hot surfaces, and handle cleaning chemicals in accordance with safety procedures. This position works a rotating schedule of four days on and two days off, averaging 40 hours per week, with both early and late shifts scheduled seven days a week. During peak periods and special events, additional hours may be required, and flexibility in scheduling is expected.

WHAT YOU OFFER

  • Completion of a post-secondary training program in culinary arts, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Experience in cooking for large groups with varied dietary needs.
  • Experience with catering preparation and service is an asset.
  • Valid Manitoba Food Handler certificate or willingness to obtain upon hiring along with a strong knowledge of safe food handling.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to engage with students, staff and other guests in a positive and friendly manner.
  • Sound time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships.
