Stephanie P. Stobbe, an Associate Professor in Business and Conflict Resolution Studies at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU), is a leading expert on Southeast Asian processes of dispute resolution. As an active educator, trainer, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practitioner, she has worked and conducted research in Canada, United States, South America, Europe, India, and Asia. An advocate for peace and gender equity, Stephanie contributed to the UN Development Programme and Peacebuilding Support Office through the American Bar Association, offering expert recommendations on gender-responsive peacebuilding tied to UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 1889. She is a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal for her “service and extraordinary contribution” to Ontario and Canada, presented at the Senate of Canada.

A long-time advocate of healthy workplace practices, Stephanie worked as a conflict resolution consultant in helping businesses establish effective workplace conflict resolution policies and processes. As an academic, she has developed several courses and workshops, and taught conflict resolution in the workplace for over 20 years. Her international work includes invitations to launch the first peacebuilding program in Laos; facilitate seminars on conflict resolution, reconciliation, and institutional design in Myanmar (Burma); and lead training on cross-cultural mediation and community justice with the Thai Ministry of Justice.

Stephanie is co-author of a new book, Hearts of Freedom - Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2025), and author/editor of Conflict Resolution in Asia: Mediation and Other Cultural Models (Lexington Publishing, 2018), Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding in Laos (Routledge Publishing, 2015), and co-editor of Critical Aspects of Gender in Conflict Resolution (Emerald Group Publishing, 2011). She is the founder and Book Series Editor for Lexington/Bloomsbury Publishing’s Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding in Asia.

Stephanie’s award-winning recent research focuses on refugees and forced migration. She chaired the 2016 CARFMS Conference on Freedom of Movement, bringing 350 participants from over 20 countries. Currently, she is a co-investigator of a SSHRC Partnership Grant for a national research project on “Equitable Opportunities for Research and Tertiary Education for People with Lived Experience of Displacement.” Stephanie is a researcher for the Hearts of Freedom (HOF) national refugee oral history project, and is the creator and curator of the museum exhibition, HOF – Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees, that has travelled to 30 different venues in every major city across Canada. For this work, she was awarded the Community Contributor Award by the Manitoba Museum.

Stephanie is an Adjunct Professor at University of Manitoba and Research Associate at Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice. She was a Visiting Professor/Researcher at the Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Hawaii, and awarded a Fellow of McLaughlin College at York University for her work in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, and on refugees and forced migration. She has served on the Expert Advisory Board of the new Centre for Asia Pacific Refugee Studies at Auckland University in New Zealand, the ADR Institute of Manitoba Board and ADR Institute of Canada. She is the current President of the Canadian Association for Refugee and Forced Migration Studies (CARFMS).
