Counselling at a professional level requires more of us than empathy and sensitivity; it requires solid grounding in the principles of social and developmental psychology and a practical knowledge of proven techniques. It requires us to be humble, and to know our own limits. Most especially, it requires us to actively examine ourselves, and deal with our own issues as courageously as we ask others to. A concentration in counselling studies will involve substantial background work in all of these areas and more.
