Interdisciplinary studies and the CMU Commons:
A shared pathway for learning.

At CMU, education isn't just about specializing, it's about connecting ideas, perspectives, people, and experiences. That's the purpose of the CMU Commons, a set of core courses that form the heart of every CMU degree. These courses invite students into big conversations about humanity, ethics, spirituality, and the world we share, creating a shared academic foundation across all programs.

Rather than learning in isolation, CMU students engage with peers from diverse disciplines, exploring complex questions through multiple lenses. Whether you're studying business, biology, or music, The Commons helps you see the bigger picture, ask deeper questions, and discover how diverse fields of knowledge inform and enrich each other.

Learning that connects

The CMU Commons spans a wide range of subjects—science, social science, humanities, and theology—while also embracing diverse modes of learning. From hands-on making and writing to work-integrated learning and engagement with Indigenous and Anabaptist/Mennonite perspectives, students encounter multiple ways of knowing. These experiences equip you to connect your education directly to your future career opportunities and to the communities you'll serve.

Courses like Ways of Knowing I and Ways of Knowing II bookend the Commons experience, offering interdisciplinary exploration and culminating in a major integrative project. Along the way, students engage with courses developed in collaboration with academic scholars and Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, explore themes of peace and reconciliation through Anabaptist traditions, and build practical skills in writing, creativity, and career readiness.

More than a curriculum—a journey

The Commons is more than a checklist of requirements—it's a shared journey through complex ideas, meaningful dialogue, and engaged learning. It shapes students into thinkers, problem-solvers, and creators—ready not just for their first job, but for a lifetime of impact through thoughtful living and purposeful work.

This kind of education forms people who can build bridges, imagine new possibilities, and contribute meaningfully to their communities and professions. The world needs graduates who are not only skilled, but deeply human—and that's what CMU seeks to cultivate.

Supportive, connected community.
Engaged, friendly faculty.

Community is at the heart of the CMU experience. Here, you're more than just a number—you're known, supported, and invited into relationships that matter. Whether in classrooms, residence halls, choirs, or around the cafeteria table, students and faculty share life together in a way that's intentional and deeply human. CMU is a place where asking honest questions is welcomed, where difference is met with dialogue, and where learning happens not just through books, but through the people around you.

Belonging at CMU isn't about fitting a mold—it's about being welcomed as you are. Rooted in a Anabaptist traditions that values peace, justice, and reconciliation, CMU fosters a culture of care and inclusion where everyone has a place. In a world that often feels disconnected, CMU offers something countercultural: a learning community where you're invited to show up fully, grow authentically, and journey alongside others in hope and purpose.
